I lost 17 1/2 pounds? Holy freaking crap!
by Hunt Ethridge at 10:46am on 01/08/09

Well here it is, weigh-out day and boy did I surprise myself!  I am down to 169 pounds!  I lost almost 18 pounds!  That's pretty impressive!  Keren calls me evil.  I have to dedicate the last 3-4 lbs. to Tiffany Michelle though.  I did her diet at the end.  Namely I'm home with the flu.  Already blew chuncks at work, came home and took some more QT in the bathroom.  Heck of a way to lose those last stubborn pounds!  I will post some pics up on here and yeah, I did record it all so you can see I didn't cheat.  I will write more when I'm feeling better, but just needed to make sure you all knew how bitchin' I was!  ;-)

Viva la flaabolution!

Moving. The best/worst workout ever.
by Hunt Ethridge at 6:57am on 12/31/08

Moving.  Sucks.  Ass.  Period.  There is no good thing about it.  I had to move my lovely Keren into my apartment, by myself.  Okay, yes, Keren helped and she is wonderful, but strength and spatial relations are not her forte.  Luckily it was only one cargo van's worth of stuff, but with only two people, that's a lot of up and down the stairs.

This is what it felt like after about 20 trips.  :-/

Thankfully, I'm a Tetris master, so we were able to load up the van for only one trip.  It was packed very well, I might add.  We spent 5 hours of time on Sunday moving and after that, I figured I goddamn-well deserved a burger.  We burned a LOT of calories.  Screw the gym, just help people move every month and you'll be good to go.  I was getting frustrated and "angry-hungry", so I went for something easy, next door and full of energy.  Five Guys burgers are AWESOME!  This is what they look like:

                                   Mmmmmmmmmm.......... wonderful decadence!

It's fun looking at your girlfriend and knowing you're living together and never have to go back and forth to different apartments again.  AND SHE MAKES ME FOOD!  That whole thing about "The quickest way to a man's heart is through his stomach" is totally true!  If you feed us, we will love you forever!  :-)  Just this morning I had to get up for work and she didn't, but she got up earlier than me to make me some eggs and mushrooms for breakfast!  I love her!

Now I have to sit here on New Year's Eve day and pretend to work.  All I'm really thinking about is what I'm going to wear tonight, what time to get my hair cut and how many vodka (low in cal!) redbulls I'll drink per hour to maintain the best buzz as late as possible.  And yes, I will be "binge drinking" tonight people.

Gorging on Christmas!
by Hunt Ethridge at 9:42am on 12/26/08

My stomach STILL is grumbing!

So Keren and I had our first Christmas together!  Want to see our first tree?  It's so pathetic that it is reminiscent of "A Charlie Brown Christmas."

                                       Isn't it a little cutie?!

Since Keren and I are saving money to move in with each other, we decided to not really buy each other stuff.  However, our one treat was on Christmas Day to eat anything we wanted!  I wanted pizza and wings and she wanted fried rice, fried shrimp and french fries!  I spent about a 1/2 hour on the phone from like 11am to 11:30 calling EVERY pizza place in a deliverable radius to me.  None were open!  Other Dominos in other cities were open, alas, not in ours.  I started getting pissed, because now I had the taste and thought in my head.  I finally got ahold of someone around 11:45 and I felt sooooooooooo happy!  :-)  It took like 45 minutes to get there, but man was it worth the wait!  I stuffed my face!

<<<<<<<-------------- tastyness!

We were so happy to stuff ourselves!  I then had food coma and passed out for a while.  Upon waking, we watched videos and movies and just lounged around.  When hungry, I'd just pick up another slice, slather it in blue cheese and feed my face.  I still haven't eaten anything since then.  My stomach was not used to so much carbs, food and cheese all at once, so it's been a little touch and go, but well worth it!  Merry Christmas all and get ready for New Year's!  w00t!

So I'm giving out dieting advice to the women in my office!
by Hunt Ethridge at 10:15am on 12/23/08

HILARIOUS!  Here I am, Mr. Gourmand himself handing out dieting advice!  I keep getting stopped by them in the hall.  "Wow, you've really lost weight!"  "How did you do it?"  "Are you exercizing?"

Feelin' pretty smug right now!  (that's my cool avatar from e-surance!)  ;-)

So I'm on the South Beach diet, more or less, right now and told them that.  Eating healthy and exercising.  That's it.  That's really all there is too it.  I remember seeing a skit on SNL called the "Stop eating so f#&*%*&^ much diet."  Like, it was this amazing thing to just not gorge yourself.  With VERY few exceptions, I don't believe the "i'm big boned" or "it's glandular" or many of the other excuses people use.  I remember talking to my friend David about the thought that fat people believe that they are one of the last groups with disabilities around that people actively make fun of and it's still PC okay.  He looked at me and said, "Well a person's outside appearance is a manifestation of their inner self."  PERFECT!  That simple sentence crystalized my feelings.  Now, I'm only saying that about people that are upset and affronted by people that judge them on their physical appearance.  If you're fat and happy, go for it!  If you are not happy with they way you look, it's in your ability, and ONLY your ability to change it.  One of the ladies who asked me about the losing weight, not even 2 hours later was eating a cheesecake cupcake!

                                                   Does this count as excercising?

Take control of your own life.  Yeah, one of those cupcakes won't kill me, but you need to learn to start saying "no."  I have pretty decent will power, so this has been MUCH easier than I thought it would be.  Not trying to be a prick, just saying that since I never even TRIED to do it, I didn't know how I'd do.  Turns out, I'm pretty good at this!  God bless being a guy!  ;-)

Does this count as dinner?
by Hunt Ethridge at 11:12am on 12/17/08

Dinner of Champions!

Pickles, pepperoncini, hummus and green beans, Miller Lite and whiskey.

Ahhhh.... nice healthy dinner, little buzz, little PS2.  Nice night...

So Alek wants to come out and play?
by Hunt Ethridge at 7:48am on 12/16/08

Well, since Alek and I have such wonderful will power or body chemistry or maybe it's just that God loves us more, and we've already lost most/all of the weight, we've decieded to make it interesting.  I bet I can lose more weight than him.  Anybody want to take side bets?  :-O

DONE!
by Hunt Ethridge at 1:34pm on 12/15/08

Well that wasn't so difficult was it?  I actually hit 175 lbs. on Saturday morning!  Which officially means I hit my goal!  Woo hoo!  Granted, it was still first thing in the morning, but I feel like I've done pretty well for myself!  My girlfriend is totally jealous of my skills and I do have to say, I'm kinda having fun tormenting her.  Hee hee...  "I lost the weight and you-ou didn't!"  Just like a 5 year-old!  So now I'll see how much weight I can ACTUALLY lose!  Maybe go for 15 lbs, down to 171.

I do have to say that my wonderful girlfriend does make it easy for me with her wonderful meals, like last night's wonderful salmon and herbs with peppers and asparagus.  Other than that, I had some beef jerky, trail mix and coffee!  May not be the best for you, but it's just goooooooooooood!  Let's see how low I can go!

The weight is coming off!
by Hunt Ethridge at 10:48am on 12/08/08

12/8/08- Just another manic monday. But minimum of 4 lbs. lighter!

Hello and welcome back to the exciting life of The Huntster!  It's been almost a week since I've posted, so I'll try to condense everything without being too verbose.  On Tuesday I went for my first personal training session at New York Sports Club with Saul.  HO-LY Crap!  I am soooooooooo out of shape.  All it was was him and a big rubber band with handles checking out my posture, flexibility and core strength.  I could just see the look in his eyes.  So basically it breaks down like this: I have no core strength, my posture is bad, my flexibility is shot and I have no endurance.  Well, at least the only place I can go is up!  :-/

How Saul sees me.                                                     How I see myself.

Wednesday morning, I'm so freaking sore.  It's just embarrassing.  I used to row crew in college, so I am familiar with working out.  It's disheartening to see how far I've dropped.  Especially when you're huffing and puffing with 8 lb. weights while Charles Atlas is working out next to you.  Oh well, I'm doing this for me and for Keren, not for them.  Plus, their balls are probably shriveled from too many steroid injections.

Wednesday night is pool night again.  I'm watching the calories (and the $) so I wasn't drinking.  At first.  Then, I proceeded to get my ass kicked by a chick that came in so drunk, so she could barely see straight.  Seriously.  Bring on the whiskey!  I was good, only had about 4 drinks and went home.  I was so frustrated.  Grrrrr.....  Oh well, there's always next season.

Pool's so much fun!  Anybody want to take me on?

For breakfast, I have Keren's awesome egg muffins and some coffee.  For lunch I've got my homemade chili, which is great.  I love it!  For dinner, I'll munch on a variety of snacks, from hard-boiled eggs, to cottage cheese, to baby carrots, to low-fat string cheese.  This South Beach diet thing's not too bad!

On Thursday, I'm back in the gym again.  Not fully recovered yet from Tuesday, but let's do this.  Saul starts me out doing a circuit.  Jog in place, jumping jacks, lunges, squats, chest press, shoulder press, repeat.  Never stopping.  We do this for about 20 minutes when I start to get a little woozy.  He keeps telling me to "man up" and keep going, which I don't like.  I know he's trying to pump me up, but I take it as kind of insulting.  Tell me "you da man" or something, don't belittle me.  Anyways, I had to stop and rest a little.  My body's just not used to the amount of exertion I'm putting it through.

Friday I have put aside as a drinking night.  Woo hoo!  We are had dinner at an Austrailian couple's house.  Keren made crab-stuffed mushrooms that were phenomenal and Christine made handmade tortellinis with meat inside, in some yogurt-mint sauce and white rice.  She wanted to show us some middle-eastern style cooking as she is Palestinian by background.  It was quite tasty in a unique way.  And obligitory wine consumption.  Duh!  Then it was my friend's bday party, so we met up and did some good old fashion Friday night drinking!  I can't tell you how much I drank as it would be considered "binge drinking" (5 drinks in one night. seriously?  5 drinks?  all night?)  So technically, let's see, a glass of white wine before dinner, a glass of red with dinner, another glass after dinner, a miller lite beer at bday party along with a celabratory Jameson shot.  So I'm already "binge drinking" 5 minutes into my night?  Stupid.  Well, let's just say I didn't end it there.

   +  =

Saturday, woke up at "La Monstra's."  So come AM, had to get up and sacrifice a young virgin to appease the beast.  (Actually, I just made some sunny-side up eggs and put them over some more crab-stuffed mushrooms.  Unique and quite yummy meal!

I weighed myself in the morning. 178 freaking pounds!  Holy cow!  I lost 8 pounds????  Granted, it was the morning and you always weigh a couple of pounds less, but still!  This makes me very happy.  I feel like my goal is attainable.  Let's see how much I can lose!

Then we went looking at apartments, like the little yuppie couple we're turning into!  :-)  The first one we saw was perfect, but when the realtor was letting us in, the first thing he says is, "So the place is great, but the only thing is that the landlord doesn't want you to have any parties."  WTF!?!?  Keren just turned back and looked at me like, "Well, there goes that apartment..."  Seriously, no parties?  So that place was out.

My parties are freaking legendary!  ;-)

Then we went shopping for the week and headed back to her place.  We did a LOT of cooking when we got back.  Which was fine, because college football was on!  Love it!  We made more egg muffins (layer spinach, feta cheese and fill with beaten eggs for one flavor and layer mild chilis, scallions and shredded mexican lowfat cheese for the other) and then I chopped lots of veggies for our dinner.  We're going surf and turf a bit with crabmeat coated sirloin steaks.  Mmmmmm....... Tossed the (imitation) crabmeat in the food processor, then mixed it with chopped red onions, lite mayo and some parm cheese.  Cooked the steak on the stove, then but a 1/2 inch thick layer of crabmeat on top, added a little more cheese and threw it in the broiler for 5-10 minutes.  Turned out great!

I am soooooooooooooooooooooooo sore that every time I get up or sit down, I yelp in pain.  Keren keeps thinking I cut myself with the knife.  My body huuuuuuuuuuuuuurts.

For my week's worth of food, I decided to go with a chuck roast and veggies.  Keren has a slow cooker, so I'm gonna toss it in there for the night and add the veggies (zucchini, yellow squash, acorn squash) in the morning for the last hour or so.  Watched movie, passed out.

SUNDAY FUNDAY!

The Giants are playing the Eagles, so Keren and her roommate Diana are hosting a football party starting at noon.  I ate a two egg muffins and some scallions for breakfast.  Diana made some 11-alarm chili.  F the 5-alarm, she went (unintentionally) for the jugular!  There were all sorts of unhealthy options to eat, chips, brie, etc... but I made do with some baby carrots and (yes) some miller lite.  Giants lost, sonofabitch.  Oh well.

Then we walk down to my apartment, caught up on some DVR and watched a movie.  I had a midnight snack of 3 hard-boiled eggs and hit the hay.

12/2/08 -Tuesday

12/2/08 - Tuesday

So Thanksgiving was tasty!  I didn't have 2 helpings, but I didn't beat myself up for enjoying the meal.

After dinner, I got jumped by the Sandman and passed out on the couch listening to football.  Ahhhh... the small pleasures in life!

                                                   Huntster OUT!

We decided, since we were all going to pass out early, to wake up before dawn and have a sunrise walk on the beach.  Also, it's the best time to find good shells before they get picked over.  We were out of the house before 6:30am and on the beach.  There were a ton of people out there!  I guess we're not the only ones to have that idea.  We walked down the beach and honestly, it was like being in National Geographic out there!  We found tons of beautiful shells, dozens of live sea urchins, starfish, a few crabs, huge, live whelks (a conch-like mollusk), little fighting conchs, a little sanddollar and then sandpipers, seagulls, pelicans, ospreys, etc...  So cool!  We walked for about 2 hours and came back home.

So my hair doesn't look perfect at 6:30 in the morning.  Leave me alone!  ;-)

My darling dog Doobie's not too sure about the crab.

                                        Great Blue Heron chillin'.

Dad took us out for breakfast and I splurged a little and had a bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich with a side of tomatoes.  Believe it or not, that was the healthiest, or rather least bad for you thing they had.  Then we all came back and passed out.  That night we went to a tree lighting ceremony/christmas party on Captiva Island.  Beforehand, my family made the awesome turkey-and-stuffing-and-gravy sandwiches, but I abstained and Keren and I made smoothies.  The party was fun and there was a great firework display.

OMG, we're in the Society Pages of Captiva Island!  :-0  ;-)

We all went out to dinner that night.  Keren and I split an appetizer of scallops wrapped in bacon and then I had some blackened snapper with veggies.  My family is very impressed with my willpower and it's not been too hard for me yet.  I'm sure it won't be easy sailing though.  We all went out dancing at a restaurant called the Jacarunda later and had a few drinks.  We came back to the house and Chad and I played a little beer pong and called it a night.

Saturday it was nice out, so Keren and I made smoothies and decided to go fishing.  We got some bait (live shrimp and frozen crabs) and headed to the fishing pier.  We fished there for a couple hours but didn't get anything.

The only fish that were caught by anybody (of like 20 people) was by a 4 year-old.  He caught two, a whiting and a flounder.  And he was deathly afraid of them once they got in and refused, wailing, to take pictures with them.  It was really funny!

The only other thing that was caught was a seagull.  Really!  Some dude was using little live fish for bait and a seagull grabbed it and hooked himself in the mouth.  The guy was literally reeling the bird in from the air!  He had no idea what to do, so I went over and got it in and held it tight to me while another good samaritan helped get the hook out.  He flew away with nothing but a little hole in his cheek.  It went surprisingly easily!  Hopefully, Keren posts the pictures of that up!

Reeling in a bird from the sky.  First time I've seen that!

                                            Going to help out.

He was surprisingly not freaking out like I thought he would.

I will fly away!  Yeah birdie!

We came home and made ourselves some sandwiches.  I had tuna and Keren reheated some chili.  Then we went out on the beach for a bit.  It was a little windy, so it was a bit chilly.  Chad, Elise, Keren and I built a great sandcastle along with a back story of it.  It had bridges and traps and defense mechanisms, a memorial site for those killed in the last attack (our dog got interested in it), protective barriers, paved walkways, three gates, etc...  We had fun.  :-)  It's necessarry to be young sometimes.

Then we went home and mom and dad made us a nice pork roast for dinner.  After dinner, we had Christmas!  Since we all can't be together for Christmas, we decided to have it over Thanksgiving.

Due to the economy, we previously decided to only draw one name and buy for that person.  We kept it under $50 to all save money.  Chad got me Connect 4 (which I asked for!), a laundry bag (asked for) and an aerobie.  Those things are fun!  Mom and Dad got us a couple little things, just so we'd have stuff to open.  I got a nice shirt and some cologne.  Then it was packing and bed.

                                                             Doobie's new toy.

Woke up at 6, made smoothies and went to the airport.  Flew back home and landed in wonderful cold, rainy Newark, NJ.  In the cab, my roommate called and told me he was going to be moving out at the end of December.  Crap!  So it looks like it's time for Keren and I to live together.  Never done that before, so we'll see.

We went to the grocery store when we got back and loaded up on healthy things.  We are going to do the South Beach diet for now and see how that goes.  Luckily she is up on all this stuff, so it makes it easier for me.  Just tell me what to do baby and I'll do it.  I went back to my place and made a big vat of chili to eat for lunch for the week since I can't have any pasta.  Keren made white chili for herself and used a cupcake pan to make little egg-muffins with broccoli and feta cheese, so we have things for breakfast.  They are awesome!

So Monday I had those for breakfast and chili for lunch.  After work, I snacked on some green beans and hummus, two hard-boiled eggs, and a bit of 1% cottage cheese.  I feel like I'm doing well!  Today, I had the same thing and after work I am going to the gym to do my fitness evaluation and get my body back in shape!  My friend, who didn't know about this, said I already looked thinner, so maybe it's already working!  With me luck!

Thanksgiving Day!
by Hunt Ethridge at 10:23am on 12/07/08

11/27/08 - Thanksgiving Day!

Well, Thanksgiving is here and we're in Florida!  So we left Monday night and flew down to Sanibel Island, FL.  My parents picked us up from the airport and drove us to the house.  When we got there, we were hungry, but there wasn't a whole lot of healthy choices to eat, so my dad made us a hamsteak with two eggs on top, so we at least got some protein going on.  On Tuesday when we woke up, I had some instant oatmeal and Keren made a smoothie with the protein powder she brought down along with strawberries and bananas.  She doesn't like fruit, except in smoothies, so at least she can do that.  Then mom and dad, Keren and I went on a 3 mile bike ride, along some great bike paths.  We even saw a baby alligator!  He was so cute!  I couldn't decide whether I'd rather cuddle him or see if I could give him a flying burrito off the top ropes and wrestle him.  Thankfully, there were wiser heads around.  ;-)
                                  Cute!

Then my little Monstra was hungry, so we went to a little seafood place called Biddles Bucket.  Most of the stuff on the menu was fried: fried gator, fried frog legs, fried shrimp, etc...  However, as Keren points out, no matter where you go, from McDonald's to a diner, there's always something you can get.  It's just that one is tempted by all the wonderful things on the menu.  I got a blackened Mahi with green beans and some boiled potatoes and an unsweetened ice tea.  Then we biked another 3 miles back home.
"La Monstra" starting to peek out.                         Working hard!

They were lollygagging, so I decided I needed to push it a little bit more and hauled ass for the last mile and a half.  Once I got back to the house, I jumped into the pool and did some cool down swimming so my legs didn't cramp up.  Sitting in the pool, you can see the Sanibel River like 10 feet behind the house.  We watched a 10 foot or so gator lazily swim by, a 4 foot egret land on top of the screened-in porch and little ducks play around.  It's so peaceful watching the palm fronds sway in the wind, the water moving around at the behest of the wind, bird calls, little lizards running around.

Okay, so here's my family, there's me, the oldest.  Then there is Barrett and his brand new wife Jaime.  They lived in San Diego but just moved to Manchester, England.  He's two years younger than me.  Four years younger than Barrett, at 26 is our youngest brother Chad.  He lives in Philly.  Barrett hadn't been to our house up in Skaneateles, NY (outside of Syracuse) for a good old northern traditional Thanksgiving in years.  My parents are both retired and live in Florida during the winter and Skan during the summer, so we'd always be here.  Barrett (or "B") missed the sitting around the fire, cold wind outside, formal dining room turkey day with candles, turtlenecks and the whole lot, so we decided to do it this year.  It would be 7 of us (including Keren) up there and we were really looking forward to it.  However, life has a funny way of messing things up.  Jaime was in CA for a wedding 2 weeks ago and shattered her ankle.  The poor girl had to have 5 screws and a plate put in.  Worse, the doctor told her she can't fly (due to blot clots) for 3-6 weeks.  :-/  So not only can't she fly to come to Thanksgiving, but she's stuck in SD!  So Barrett had to scrap his plans and flights and fly out to be with her.  So the rest of our family had to figure out, within a matter of 2 hours what to do.  We decided that Mom and Dad would stay in Florida and we'd fly there sans Barrett and Jaime.  Jaime's family is all in SD, so they are able to at least have Thanksgiving with her family.  So since our plans all changed, Chad invited his new girlfriend Elise down to FL with us.  So there are 6 of us here, and we're having fun, but it's not the original plan.  I was looking forward to showing Keren a traditional Thanksgiving and having her and my sister-in-law get to know each other, but hey, c'est la vie.

So Chad and Elise were coming in Tuesday night.  Keren and I wanted to go to the grocery store to get us some healthy food and snacks and also to make dinner for everyone that night.  Mom and Dad went to pick them up from the airport while we went shopping.  We decided to make ground chicken burgers, grilled veggies and roasted potatoes.  We had to convince the butcher to grind up some chicken for us, but with Keren, that's not too difficult!  We came home and started cooking!  For the burgers, Keren pureed green and red peppers, onions and garlic.  We put that into a bowl with fresh rosemary, worcestershire sauce, lemon juice and the ground chicken.  She mashed that all up to make patties.  For the veggies, we got zucchini, eggplant, portobella mushrooms, onions, peppers, yellow squash and asparagus.  We have a nice grill here, so we cut them big to cook on them.  She marinated them in lots of stuff which I won't even attempt to list.  Check out her blog for that.  The potatoes were MY job!  Oh, yeah!  So I cut them up into small pieces and put them into a bowl.  I then added fresh rosemary, fresh dill, old bay seasoning, sea salt, ground pepper, garlic powder, regular salt and then poured in tome extra virgin olive oil.  Then I got down and dirty mixing it all up with my hands.  I like getting dirty with my cooking!

The fam came home and we grilled it all up!  (And by "we" I mean my wonderful dad!)  My parents were happy and impressed with our preparations and my brother and Elise were duly impressed also!  We totally forgot to take pictures of the finished products, but it was all soooooooooooo good.  Everybody loved it!  No one had really heard of chicken burgers before, but they'll tell the tale of these for ages to come.  I will admit, we had some white wine also, but hey, it's the holidays!  Then we watched Syracuse basketball take down the Kansas jayhawks, defending champs!  Great game!

                                                       Dad cooking it up!

Wednesday we got up and Keren and I both had smoothies for breakfast.  Then we loaded up our bags, hopped on our bikes and decided to check out Bowman's Beach, which was voted one of Amazon's top 10 secluded beaches.  It was 9 miles away, so a bit of a hike on bikes.  I kept up with Keren for awhile, but our bodies are different and what was a workout for her didn't feel like I was pushing myself enough, so after a bit, I went at my own faster speed.  It took me around an hour and Keren 20 minutes longer.  We got there and it wasn't secluded at all, very public in fact.  Still, it wasn't bad.  I hopped in right away, but it's too cold for Keren.  However, she did wear the little bikini, so that made my day!  :-D  We had made tuna salad sandwiches with lite mayo for lunch.  I also packed some hummus and baby carrots for a side and Keren brought more grilled veggies.  We stayed there for around two hours.  I wanted to ride back, but Keren's back cramped up, so we called to get picked up.  I was ready to keep going!  When we got home, mom had made some home-made chili and salad, so it was a nice hearty dinner, but not too unhealthy.  No wine.

Not as warm as we'd like, but hey, it beats NYC!

We got a little late this morning around 11 and Mom and Dad were going to cook a big breakfast of sausage, eggs, potatoes, toast, etc...  As much as we wanted to have some, we reheated some chicken burgers and some reduced fat cheese.  I will say, I don't think I am going to skimp too much on today's dinner.  We'll just have to work it off.  I think we'll go jogging today before dinner, as our sit-bones are a little sore from riding a lot.

Happy Thanksgiving all!

11/24/08
by Hunt Ethridge at 10:09am on 12/07/08

11/24/08 - Monday

I'm sure anybody that has dieted knows this, but weekends are much harder to be good!  Waking up Saturday morning, both Keren and I were really hungry!  Drinking the night before gets me really hungry in the morning.  So she and I wanted to binge, but we didn't want to go to a burger joint or cheesy omelets, etc...  So, even though it was expensive, we went sushi.  I had four rolls, some soup and goyza.  Mmmmm.....  Then we proceeded to lay around and watch movies.

That night, we were gonna do another chicken dish, but I was a little sick of chicken so we made a KICK-ASS dinner of talapia, asparagus and salad. (see awesome pic)  I am really liking rubs now.  We used McCormack's grillmates seafood run on the fish (along with garlic, lemon juice and some salt).  Rubs are a great way to add flavor without adding fat.  At this point, I'll rub anything!  They're so freaking good!  We also got some sugar free Jell-o for dessert.  Yum!  I'm really happy the way the meal turned out!  I mean seriously, look at the pic!  We garnished it with a rosemary sprig to look good.  Then we watched the movie "And Then She Found Me."  Anyone who says that it's a comedy, lies.  It's a decent movie, just not a comedy in the slightest.

So freaking good! Yum!                   Mmmmmm......dessert!  Which would you choose?

186.5!  That's how much I weigh.  So I gotta get to 176.  And Keren's scale told me I have 23% body fat.  Once I start working out, I'll get a better idea of all that jazz.  I really can't wait to get started on working out.  Keren and I are planning on running, golfing, swimming, kayaking, walking on the beach and bike riding over this next week, but I want to get into the gym, lay down a plan and really get started.  I learned on Saturday that there are 4 types of calories.  I looked at the nutritional info on the back of the talapia and it said 170 calories per serving.  So I told Keren I'd rather eat a bag of Doritos if it's the same.  She looked at me for a moment and then said, "You don't really know this?"  "Know what?" I asked confusedly.  She then explained to me the whole calorie thing.  She thought it was cute that I didn't know, but if you never watched your calories before, there's no way you'd know.

Yes, I have hobbit feet.  Deal with it.

So we packed up her stuff for Florida (she lives a few blocks away from me).  She has this tiny little bikini, OMG!  She's never worn it for me before, and I keep trying to get her to.  It's a tiny Brazilian thing that doesn't leave much of ANYTHING to the imagination!  And I know she's not feeling her sexiest with the weight she's gained, but MAN, she looks freaking HOT in that little number!  She's bringing it down for when we have private beach time (read: not with the parents.)  I can't wait.  She is sooooooooo beautiful.  And yes, I am biased.

Sunday morning I made her breakfast.  I love cooking breakfast!  I taught her the differences between eggs that are sunny-side up, over easy, broken hard, soft boiled, poached, etc...  In Puerto Rico, if you order fried eggs, you get them in whatever style the cook wants.  They don't have delineations.  2 egg whites, 1 whole egg and a little mozzarella cheese scrambled up and two pieces of whole wheat toast.  I wasn't hungry yet, I just need to appease "La Monstra."  At around 4 I had two hard-boiled eggs.  Then my friend Todd and his wife Jolin came to visit and wanted a pasta dinner.  So we all went to a little restaurant called Tratoria Sapporito in Hoboken.  They are really good, but not exactly the healthiest.  Keren and I split beef carpaccio and a mushroom and pepper appetizers.  Then I got the lemon shrimp with mushrooms and penne, no sauce.  Tasty, but not what I want when I go there!  Give me pasta carbonara!  Mmmmmm...  And we has some red wine also.  Can't eat at an italian restaurant with friends and NOT have wine!

So I only had around 1000-1200 cals not including the wine yesterday.   ....which I feel justifies my two breakfast sandwhiches this morning.  I am flying out to Florida today, so I need to get something to eat on the plane.  Then, we'll try to keep ourselves as sinless as possible down in Florida.  Or if we do, to work out extra hard.

11/20/08 - Thursday

So I went to NY Sports Club yesterday to get myself a little gym membership.  I told them all about this endevor of mine and they were anxious to help.  They threw in 3 sessions with a personal trainer and a locker for free!  Anything free in my book is good!  I didn't get a chance to work out yet and I only have 4 days until I head down to Florida for Thanksgiving, so I don't know if I'll be able to officially start until I get back.  I will do some running and swimming in FL to start trying to get the body used to activity again.

So last night had some beers.  It's funny how much this calorie thing you think about.  "Geez, 110 calories per beer, huh?  Well, I only had one meal yesterday, so I can afford to put away a few."  I guess a lot of girls go their whole life thinking this way.  I'm glad I haven't had to!  If you're interested, he's the URL to find out: http://recipecircus.com/recipes/awsum34/TIDBITS---You-Need-To-Know/Beer.html

Had a veggie omlette for breakfast, oatmeal with cinnamon and honey at 3 and I'll probably have some of the pasta I made tonight.  Other than that, not much to report.  Peace and hair grease!

11/19/08 - Wednesday

So we're doin' it.  Right now I'm sitting at my desk, my pants are unbuttoned and my belt is on a very loose notch.  These are things I've not been paying attention to before, but c'mon, you really don't want to have to do that.  It's just that at around 185 lbs. (I do the official weigh in tonight) and 6 feet tall, I don't look horrible.  I eat and drink anything I want, don't work out and I have a hot-ass girlfriend, so I have no real incentive to tone up.  But I know Keren's at the heaviest she's ever been and wants to slim down.  (You heard about the split pants and the "diaper rash" right?  It took a lot of effort not to snicker...)  So what does a good boyfriend do?  Supports her and does it with her.  Albeit with a lot of bitching and moaning, but hey, that's my right.

So 10 lbs. in 8 weeks is not just changing your diet around.  There's some working out in my future.  So I called NY Sports Club today and they offer month to month memberships.  So I'm going to do that so I can work out with Keren and we can help each other.  I have a meeting with them today where I'll get my weigh in.

I used to be a starving actor, which is not just a cliche.  There were times when I was so broke, all I'd eat all day was a baguette.  No spread, no filling, just gnawing on that loaf all day.  Which is good, because now I can "turn off" my hunger valve.  I can easily go 24 hours without eating.  I don't like it, but I can do it.  So I don't see me having TOO much trouble with the smaller eating as long as I can Sunday binge!  It's 3pm now and I haven't eaten yet today.  A coffee to start the day and it fills me up a lot.  I'm not trying to not eat, I just go as long as I can to save money and eat less.  Keren. Cannot. Do this.  She HAS to eat.  On weekend mornings, I'm dead asleep and start feeling her getting restless.  She needs to eat or something will get killed.  We call it/her "La Monstra" at that point.  I can say something to her and you can see it not even go in the brain, because the only thing she can think of is getting some food in her.  I've also learned that I am not permitted to do anything until La Monstra is appeased.  I'd LIKE to keep food in the fridge for her, but I'm a guy; we have water, beer and mustard in the fridge.

"La Monstra"

So last night we made a couple of chicken dishes.  I cut up 3 lbs. of chicken breasts and rubbed in some Key West rub (I love it!), some Emeril essence and lemon pepper.  I sauteed/cooked it in a pan while boiling 3 lbs. of whole wheat pasta.  Keren is a great cook, so when drained, she added tahini, soy sauce and oyster sauce (not made with oysters, thank goodness, as I found out) and boiled veggies.  Then add the chicken and viola!, spicy chicken lo mein!  We also did a type of chicken satay with peanut butter to have another flavor.  So I've got that waiting for me when I decide to eat.  Which I should do soon.  But I have more important things to do right now, like figuring out how to drink with the lowest calorie intake possible!

Tonight's a drinking night!  I know what you're thinking, it a Wednesday!  Well, I play on a pool league and we meet every Wednesday.  (That's billiards people, not Michael Phelps.)  And though it is theoretically possible to play pool and not drink, I've never seen it done.  So, on to my alcohol research...  I'll let you know how it goes.

2 people, 2 months, 20 lbs. S*#@, okay, let's do this.

Lose 10 lbs in 8 weeks?  F#*$!  So the gauntlet has been thrown.  Losing weight and getting healthy are definitely two different things.  I'm a guy.  We "work out."  We want to build muscle mass and decrease love handles.  Losing weight means just that.  So my normal thoughts are out the window.  It's all cardio and dieting.  Chick stuff.  This sucks.  And these are the reasons: 1) I actually haven't been to a gym or worked out in YEARS!  2) at 32, my metabolism isn't what it used to be.  3) beer rocks!  For heaven's sake, I live in one of the most densely populated bar areas in all of North America! (Hoboken, NJ)  3) even when I did sports in college, I lifted weight and did a little cardio.  I hate cardio.  Now it's going to be ALL cardio!  4) I like food.  A lot.  And I can eat what to most people is an insane amount.  There are various photos of me hanging on various walls of various restaurants for eating large amounts of various foods.  I can put it away!  So healthy (read: tasteless) food, less of it and cardio.  Boy, at least this isn't over any holidays or this would really suck!  Oh, wait,...... s*&#....

Believe it or not, I'm not pregnant.

So I suppose you are asking why I'm doing this?  Well, I am a guinea pig.  My girlfriend and I packed on like 10-15 lbs. of relationship weight and it's just sitting there.  She's actually being good and trying to lose it on her own.  Me?  I'm sitting on the couch wondering if a frozen dinner or day-old pizza will be better.  And then the kicker; If we don't lose the weight someone I hate will get my money.  It sounds weird, but hopefully it'll be a good motivator.  I REALLY don't want them to get my moolah!  And you know who I hate?  Keith Smart.  I'm sure none of you know who that is, so let me enlighten you.  In 1987, when I was an impressionable youth of 11, the Syracuse Orangemen basketball team survived March Madness and made it to the final championship game!  We were playing against Bobby Knight's Indiana Hoosiers and we were winning the game by 2 points with a few seconds left.  With like 4 seconds left, Keith Smart throws up a baseline 3-pointer to go up by 1 and win the game, thereby dashing a young boys dream and a great school's season.  He sucks.  Hard, big moose c*#$.  So yeah, that's who I hate.  And I'm putting up $300.  I don't want the lucky-ass bastard getting it.  BTW, here's the video of it:
So now I'm doing all sorts of research on healthy snacks (cottage cheese with hot sauce), what a serving size actually means (they are gnome-sized) and how to actually get my sedentary body up and out running without dying.  At least I have a wonderful, smart, supportive girlfriend who is very knowledgable about healthy eating and a good work-out partner.  So we are going to document our lives for the next 8 weeks and see how this goes.  I figure, worst case scenario, I can cut off an arm for the weigh-in.  They are doing wonders at reattaching limbs these days, right?.........

Trying not to suck it in.                     I'm dead sexy!

My hot baby!                               I am definitely NOT a boob man....  ;-)
