Angel Logan's Write of Passage -- Weigh-in Day
by Angel Logan at 4:50pm on 03/30/09

Finally, weigh-in day has arrived. My best friend Colleen took a day trip from Maine down to my place here in Massachusetts, which is only an hour and half away. She wanted to be here with me for moral support, and to be my official witness. I have to say that I am so incredibly lucky to have Colleen in my life. She is one of the most supportive individuals I know.

Of course, I was holding my breath the entire time, because the past three months have been beyond challenging, with so much on my plate, and with a close family member’s health issues.

I had not weighed myself the majority of the time, until last week, because I felt that checking the scale every day would be counterproductive. I still feel that way. As I expressed in one of my earlier column entries – it is not nor has it ever been about the numbers. For the sake of the Flaab.com protocol, I focused upon losing twenty pounds specifically, which is why I stepped upon the scale today. However, eating healthier, wearing clothing that I enjoy, and just feeling better was primary objective. Remember, your chronological age, clothing size, or number of pounds is not important, as long as you are a healthy and happy person, inside and out!

As I mentioned in my most recent post, I had hoped to exceed my goal, but the fact that I didn’t is not discouraging. It simply provides me with another goal to pursue, because I do not plan to change my eating habits. I have been feeling better, more energetic, and I enjoy the way my clothing fits. If I continue the way I am going, I will make even more progress. Of course, I am leaving the scale out of it this time, and I am just going to keep doing what I have been doing, because it works.

With that said, I would like to tell you what you have been waiting to hear – I have reached my twenty-pound weight loss objective by my goal date of April 1, 2009, and I am so glad to be able to share that with all of you. Therefore, my husband’s ex will not be receiving any money from me.

This has been quite an experience, because I am not a public person regarding my personal life. It was not easy for me to share the little bits and pieces of my life that I did, and while I do not plan to paint my overall personal life onto a public billboard any time soon, I am glad that I took this particular challenge. Not only did I meet my weight loss goal, but also, I made several new friends along my weight loss journey, through the Flaab.com site, and that was probably the most valuable part of the entire experience.

I congratulate everyone who has made it to his or her weight loss objective, and I wish the best to those who are still working on it.

Finally, I would like to extend a special thank you to E. Jean Carroll and Kenneth Shaw for creating this site, and for permitting me to participate. Flaab.com has been about more than weight loss plans, or bets – it has been about the kind of motivation that encourages camaraderie, provokes laughter and joy, and inspires hope. As far as I am concerned, hope is the nourishment that every human being needs in his or her life.

Remember my motto:

NO DEFEAT … NO LIMITATIONS!

Angel Logan's Write of Passage - 10 days to go
by Angel Logan at 1:11pm on 03/21/09

Well, it is the last stretch before my final weigh-in.  I had hoped to lose more than my original goal, but I will be happy reaching the goal I set, and then setting the next goal, to continue to lose more.  Once you have the momentum going, it is much easier to maintain the same lifestyle, rather than just stopping.

I have always liked cauliflower, but hated it a bit at the beginning of my weight loss journey.  It seems that the one-eyed cauliflower monster and the evil broccoli elves from my Christmas poem have turned into friendly beings.  I actually look forward to eating my cauliflower and broccoli snacks now, as those items have become a regular part of my diet, rather than the occasional side dishes they were before.

I have had to catch a few of life’s unexpected curve balls along the way, but thus far, I have managed to prevail.  I still walk every day, choosing to be a pedestrian, but now that the weather is getting better in New England, I am able to walk more.

I also found out that sugarless Ruby Red grapefruit juice tastes just as good as the one with sugar.  Who knew?  Eating earlier in the day, and having more healthy snacks throughout the rest of the day, as opposed to one meal in the early evening seems to make a huge difference, not only in weight loss, but also in increased energy levels.

This has been a good experience for me, and I still have ten more days to go.  Therefore, stay tuned, because I look forward to making the official announcement that I have reached my twenty-pound weight loss goal, AND that my husband’s ex will not receive any of my money.  HAHA

Until next time – NO DEFEAT … NO LIMITATIONS!

Angel Logan's Write of Passage - Count to Ten
by Angel Logan at 9:59pm on 03/13/09

I believe that routine is a key element in weight loss plans.  Adhering to a consistent schedule, when eating, exercising, or sleeping, enables the body to react accordingly.  I have to say that it has been challenging for me recently, because routine has not been residing within my world.  I have faced a few challenging and stressful situations that have required my time and full attention. Unfortunately, these events have affected my eating, sleeping, and working times, which has slowed down my overall diet.

I started losing weight, but with everything on my plate (no pun intended), I have reached a flat terrain without any more weight loss or gain.  I have not been eating more and my desire for food has not increased, but this reinforces why it is so important to maintain a regular eating schedule.  Your body depends upon that timetable to handle digestion, fat-burning, rest, exercise – even simple walking and every day movements.

We take these areas of life for granted, presuming that if we do not stuff our faces with calories or high fat content, we will be safe.  However, that is not the case at all, and if we are trying to lose weight, constant changes tend to confuse the body, and it does not know how to react.  Thus, weight loss slows down and becomes dormant, until our bodies can find a steady pace to follow once again.

I knew that my eating and sleeping schedules were an issue when I began my weight loss plan, and were probably the biggest problems.  Again, I have not gained any weight, but my goal was not too big, and it is not that far away.

Difficult things happen in life – stressful and often painful events that we cannot control, throwing a monkey-wrench into our plans.  Instead of panicking or accepting defeat, we have to embrace our resolve, face our challenges, and rise to the occasion to prevail.

When life throws a curveball at me, I count to ten.  I know that sounds beyond simple, and to some extent – it is that simple.  While I am counting to ten, I am taking a deep breath, regrouping, and renewing my life’s plan, or in this case, my weight loss plan.  I know that I have reprioritize, and although I still have stresses and worries – I can still find a way to make it all work, if I maintain the determination to succeed.  I do not have any doubts, and neither should you.  So, if you are feeling overwhelmed by a few of life’s curveballs and you are not far away from your finish line, do what I do – count to ten, and get your second wind, to finish this weigh loss race with a victory!!

Until next time – NO DEFEAT … NO LIMITATIONS!

Angel Logan's Write of Passage - Exercise
by Angel Logan at 1:09am on 03/06/09

MY KIND OF EXERCISE!

I have always been one who does not have the time to get into an exercise regimen.  Not to mention, because of a bad auto accident several years ago, my knee range of motion is extremely limited.  However, I discovered an item that seems like the kind of exercise I could try.  HAHA

Okay, maybe it will not work, but I can envision myself sitting, spinning back and forth, while reviewing documents on my laptop for various client projects.  As long as it is something that I could do, while multitasking – it might be worth a try.

I think the manufacturers call it the Red XL Exerciser, but I think they should call it the “Sit N Spin” exerciser.  What do you think?

Angel Logan's Write of Passage - Skin Care
by Angel Logan at 1:06am on 02/27/09

Women who wear make-up – have you ever had days when your foundation suddenly felt different or did not look as smooth and natural on your face?  I know that many of us have had that experience.  Of course, cosmetic companies are notorious for changing areas of their lines or discontinuing our favorite products that we love and use every day.  While that is a HUGE pet peeve of mine – it isn’t always the reason for cosmetic inconsistencies.  Sometimes, our makeup feels different because the quality of our skin is different.

A perfect example would be the monthly pimple that many women get on their faces.  As if we really need a blatant, literally in-your-face reminder that it is that time of the month again!  My point is that during that time, our bodies experience significant changes, in chemical makeup and hormones.  Consequently, those changes can often manifest into blemishes, dryness, or oily skin.

The same thing applies to our diets, and the foods that we consume.  If we are eating foods high in sugar, sodium, or fat, it shows in our skin, especially our faces.  We often brush off skins issues or acne, or simply apply the first medication off the shelf that we can find.  Medication will provide a temporary solution to the problem, but if we are still eating foods that are unhealthy, the problem will most likely resurface.

Water may not make your skin moist, but if your organs and body are functioning properly because you have enough water in your system, then your skin’s condition will be better.  Moisturizers, cleansers, and high quality makeup will definitely help, but the best way to maintain your skin is by maintaining your body.

My makeup looks and feels so much better when I am eating plenty of vegetables and drinking water daily.  In fact, the monthly pimple I mentioned earlier has not made an appearance since I started my weight loss plan in December.  I know it is because I am eating healthier foods and taking better care of myself.  It seems that life’s theme begins with our core.  When we can take care of what is happening within, physically, emotionally, and spiritually – the rest will fall into place.

Until next time – NO DEFEAT … NO LIMITATIONS!

Angel Logan's Write of Passage - Why We Eat
by Angel Logan at 11:49am on 02/17/09

Emotional eating – do any of you suffer from that?  I don’t usually, but once in a while I do.  Of course, my emotional eating is never consistent.  Most people either do not eat when they are overwhelmed with stress or always eat when they are feeling stress.  I tend to go back and forth.  Sometimes when I feel challenged by life – the last thing I want to do is to eat.  However, once in a while, I crave comfort foods, and we all know that my comfort foods are carbs – PASTA!

Anyway, I think we need to ask ourselves why we either eat more or eat less during the momentous times in our lives.  I believe that part of it is history, and the conditioning that we receive throughout our entire lives.

When there is a funeral, people send tons of food to the families. Isn’t that crazy?  The families are inundated with tasks, from planning the memorial services, to handling the practical aspects of life like insurance, bills, etc.  The families are usually so busy with these types of tasks that they do not have time to properly grieve.  Yet, when it is all over, they will notice bowls and pans full of food from everyone, on the counters, in the refrigerator, and in the freezer.

When someone experiences a victorious moment in life, we usually like to go out to restaurants to celebrate.  Softball and baseball teams go out for pizza after their games.  We bake cakes to celebrate birthdays, and make huge turkey dinners to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas. We usually eat large dinners on Easter, and then there is the Easter candy, eggs, chocolate, and more!  We plan barbeques for Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day, and most gatherings revolve around some type of menu planning.

What about weddings? When we plan weddings – a significant amount of time goes into the menu, which is the focal point of the reception. The funny thing is that when you hear about the wedding after, people talk about the music and the food.

Hmmm, no wonder weight is an issue.  We seem to equate the most pivotal moments in our lives with food.  Other countries laugh at us for having large portions, but I don’t buy that as a reason for weight gain.  Many critics take issue with fast food restaurants or the type of food served in the schools, but I think it has less to do with the type of foods available, and more to do with what we learn about food through our journeys.

If we are taught that food provides comfort during difficult times, and is a celebratory tool during blissful moments, then we need to rethink our use of food, rather than worry so much about the smaller details.  Yes, do not get me wrong – the smaller details are important. However, if we are eating to soothe or celebrate continually throughout each event of our lives, the small details will pale in comparison to the volume of food that we are consuming.

What about those who do not eat during stressful or triumphant times?  Not eating is just as unhealthy as eating too much.  I have to admit that I did not eat very much at all, while dating my husband. I was so beyond in-love that food was the last thing on my priority list.  Of course, I remember when my mother suffered from a serious illness, and I did not want to eat then either.  Fortunately, she is doing well today.

My point is that we choose extreme measures to follow regarding our use of food.  We do not eat to sustain ourselves.  Food plays a paramount role within most of our lives, and if we expect to overcome any of our weight issues, whether it is too much or too little – we need to place more emphasis on finding a way to enjoy food, without it taking over our lives.  Sounds easy, right?  Of course, it is not easy, because it is a behavior that we have learned from childhood. However, it is never too late to learn new behaviors, and discover other ways to comfort us or celebrate the events in our lives. We just have to make a commitment to do the work, make the changes, and live healthier lives.

Until next time – NO DEFEAT … NO LIMITATIONS!

Angel Logan's Write of Passage - Serious Note
by Angel Logan at 8:20pm on 02/10/09

I watched someone close to me lose 80 pounds in a short period, because of a serious illness.  During that time, medical professionals presumed that she was giving up on life, because she did not try to eat, or fight to recover.  What they did not realize until they knew all of the facts was that she did not have an appetite because of severe pain.  Of course, not having an appetite and taking heavy-duty pain medication on an empty stomach exacerbated the situation.  She could not hold anything down in her stomach, because it was upset, and as she lost weight, her energy levels dropped significantly.  This was a vicious cycle that beat her down in the worst way possible.

She did not give up on life – she simply did not have the energy to fight.  Depression began to set in, her organs did not function properly, and her mental clarity became a bit foggy because her body was malnourished.  She needed the help of health care professionals to find ways to combat the effects of the pain medication, while managing her pain to an appropriate comfort level.  In addition, they had to provide her with appetite stimulants, and treat her with anti-nausea medications to enable her to eat on her own volition without negative results.  When they were able to find a balance between the different areas of her treatment, she began to regain her strength, her haze turned into clarity, and her will to fight grew once again.

While this situation is of a more extreme and serious nature – it is important to understand the effects of weight loss on the body and mind, if you do not handle your weight loss plans responsibly.  This individual was fortunate, because her health care professionals were able to help her recover, despite the serious illness that caused so many health issues in her life.

She did not realize how out-of-control her situation would get, and that when the body loses weight rapidly, it becomes unhealthy, and has adverse affects.  She did not have control over her situation.  However, we do.  While those of us who are still on our weight loss plans are not suffering from serious illnesses, we still need to pay attention to our health, and we need to make sure that we are not losing weight in an unhealthy manner.  It does not matter if we choose to lose weight on our own or if something causes us to lose weight like a physical condition, because the results will be the same, if we allow our weight loss to take over our lives.

Perhaps this subject matter is more serious than the light-hearted posts that most read and prefer, but it is important to understand the psychological effects of rapid and significant weight loss.  If we act responsibly during this process, we will avoid the serious consequences that could arise if we are not careful.

Until next time – NO DEFEAT … NO LIMITATIONS!

Angel Logan's Write of Passage - Substitutes
by Angel Logan at 1:24am on 02/06/09

Okay, fellow flaabers – do any of you really think that mashed cauliflower is an adequate substitute for mashed potatoes?  I tried it.  Seriously, it was not that great.  Don’t get me wrong – I like cauliflower, but I also know what it is, and I do not expect it to taste like something other than cauliflower.  Why should we try to convince ourselves that some of these “so-called” substitutes are sufficient when they are not?  No matter how much I like bologna, it will never taste like Filet Mignon.  Veggie burgers will never taste like hamburgers, and tofurkey – well, need I say more?

I am not saying that these substitutes are bad for you, if that is what you enjoy eating, but do not fall for delusion that these foods taste like anything other than what they actually are.  Scrambled tofu is not anything like scrambled eggs.

Now if you dig tofu, then by all means – eat it!  Enjoy it, sauté it or bake it, but make sure that you own it.  Many people enjoy tofu, soy, veggie burgers, and mashed cauliflower.  However, if you do not like any of those items, find something to eat that you do enjoy, and that fits within your weight loss or nutritional eating plan.  You do not need to torture yourself with substitutes that are not palatable or do not adequately feed your cravings.

When I chose this weight loss plan, I chose to remove the majority of carbohydrates from my diet, which unfortunately includes mashed potatoes.  However, you do not have to give up potatoes.  There are many ways to prepare your favorite spuds, to make them healthier. For instance, instead of mashing with butter and milk, chicken broth is a popular choice today, and is better for your diet.

Shop around for a tasty butter flavored seasoning, if you want to add a little butter flavor to your potatoes without all of the fat.  Instead of regular eggs, try Egg Beaters, which is a healthier alternative, but still gives you the same great taste of scrambled eggs.

Eating healthier may take a little more time and research, but it will be worth it, when you discover nutritious ways to eat the foods that you love, without gaining weight!!

Until next time – NO DEFEAT … NO LIMITATIONS!

Angel Logan's Write of Passage - Inside & Out
by Angel Logan at 6:26pm on 01/29/09

As I was sitting in a little nearby coffee shop, during a brief meeting, I noticed two different women sitting alone at their own tables.  One was seemingly 20-30 pounds overweight – let’s call her Mary, for the sake of addressing her more easily in this post.  The other female was thin and in shape – let’s call her Beth.

Mary seemed to be happy, enjoying multiple conversations on her cell phone.  Between cell phone conversations, she was rather social with other people in the coffee shop near her table, as well as with the staff.  The owner stopped by her table to chat, and the counter staff went out of their way to be friendly to her.  Clearly, they knew her, but she had a warm, outgoing nature, and I imagine that she probably makes friends easily.  She did not have that too friendly, creepy factor – she just seemed genuinely nice, and people appeared to enjoy being around her.

She was not dressed particularly fashionable – just average jeans, a sweatshirt and very little make-up, yet she carried herself like the most confident woman in the world.  Beth, on the other hand, was dressed very stylishly, and had great accessories.  She wore here make-up well, and had the best shoes.  (You know – it is all about the shoes!)

Anyway, Beth did not talk to anyone, and barely smiled.  She looked at her cell phone a few times, but never dialed it, and it never rang.  She glanced at her watch several times, stared into space more often than not, and did not go out of her way to be social with anyone.

It made me think about the misconception regarding many thin people.  Often, there is a presumption that the most beautiful, thin, and fashionable individuals must be on top of the world.  They have everything, so they must be beyond happy.  However, that did not seem to be the case, with the two women in the coffee shop.  The one with everything on a superficial level, sat alone without any joy upon her face.  The one who needed to lose some weight, and cared less about her appearance really seemed to enjoy life.

It simply proves that problems exist in everyone’s lives.  Life’s challenges do not discriminate, by affecting one person or another.  Beth could have had boyfriend problems, financial issues, or loneliness.  I think we often look at someone’s appearance and prejudge without knowing who they really are, and with the media’s portrayal of the beautiful people in the world – it is easy to fall into an inaccurate, judgmental way of thinking.

Who am I to judge Mary as being overweight at all?  Perhaps she is in great physical and emotional health, and happy with life and herself.  She may love sweatshirts and jeans, and does not have the time or the inclination to apply makeup to her face.

I wondered how much pressure Beth might be feeling in her life.  Was she naturally thin, or did she feel the need to fit into a particular dress size according to society’s criteria?  Was she as healthy physically and emotionally as Mary?  I guess I will never know, but I hope Beth finds the happiness that Mary apparently had that day.

Losing weight can be a great thing if it is for the right reasons.  I hope that everyone who is embarking upon a weight loss plan is working on everything, from the physical to the emotional – not just the eating habits.  The results will be long lasting and healthier, if we take care of our spirits too!

Until next time – NO DEFEAT … NO LIMITATIONS!

Angel Logan's Write of Passage - Reflection
by Angel Logan at 3:56pm on 01/22/09

SEA OF REFLECTION

Walk along the crystal grains
of the white sandy shore
and hear the music of the ocean
call out to you.

The voice of the sea
will sing to you in whispers
slowly wiping away the tears
of the fog that blinds you.

Holding on to the fear of
pain, rejection and loneliness
will only lead you into a funhouse of images
distorting the mirror of who you really are.

Your heart will stop weeping
and your injured spirit will heal,
if you take a chance and open your eyes,
relinquish the fear and
look into the sea of reflection.

The hidden life and love
that remains locked within your prison of fear
will freely release as you begin
to see yourself and all of the good
that is inside of you,
awaiting to be shared with those you love.

If you can trust yourself and your spirit,
If you can believe in you
and the all of the happiness and special gifts
that you have to offer ...
You will always see nothing but beauty
every time you look into the sea of reflection.

Angel Logan's Write of Passage - Incentive
by Angel Logan at 2:26am on 01/17/09

How many of you placed your wagers against your husband or boyfriend's ex-girlfriend?  I suppose that is definitely incentive to lose weight.  I agree, because I placed my wager against my husband’s ex-girlfriend too.  That was an easy bet to place, because I do not intend to share any of my money with her, and I am sure the rest of you are not going to let the ex-girlfriends win your money either.

Clearly, she is out of the picture and in the category of ex-girlfriend because she did not have a future with him.  Your guy is with you for a reason, and while physical attraction plays a part – if you have a solid relationship, it is because you built it upon a foundation of love, respect, and trust.  With that said, you can place more emphasis on losing weight for you – to be fit and healthy, to wear your favorite clothing, or to feel better about yourself.

Personally, I think losing the weight will be the easy part, and chances are, most of us will win our wagers, just to spite the ex-girlfriends.  However, the challenging part will be finding the incentive to maintain the weight loss.  How many of you will want to reward yourselves with a special treat for reaching your weight loss goals?  We live in a world where we reward each other and ourselves with food, and yummy treats, but that could be the beginning of a downward spiral toward the old eating habits, and way of life.

When I committed to losing weight, it was a life altering decision.  I knew that if I changed my eating habits, it would have to be a permanent change to maintain my weight loss after the deadline.  While I call this a “weight loss” plan, I should really call it an “eating healthier” plan, because choosing healthy food is not about dieting, it is a decision to take better care of myself.

I cannot do this for my husband’s affections, because he loves me for me, whether I am twenty pounds heavier or lighter.  I have to do this for me, because I value myself enough to be the best that I can be.  Therefore, my initial incentive for dropping a few pounds may be his ex-girlfriend, but the best reason for maintaining a healthy lifestyle will always be me.

I hope that all of you will choose you to be your life long incentive, to healthier living!

Until next time – NO DEFEAT … NO LIMITATIONS!

Angel Logan's Write of Passage - Shrimp
by Angel Logan at 11:09pm on 01/12/09

Do you love shrimp as much as I do?  This item is definitely part of my diet.  Although shrimp is higher in cholesterol, it is not high in saturated fat, which is what shrimp would also need to elevate your cholesterol to a dangerous level.  Of course, drenching it in butter or any other fattening sauces might not be the greatest idea.  Not to mention, including shrimp with high calorie meals is not going to make the meal healthy either.  That would be like saying a banana split is good for you, if it has blueberries and bananas, because anti-oxidants and potassium are good for you.  (HAHA)

Shrimp can be beneficial to you because of the Omega-3 fatty acids and the protein – both essential for good nutrition, and shrimp are low in calories, carbohydrates, and fat.  The key is choosing the right ingredients or meals to maintain a healthy diet, and happy taste buds.

With that said, I would like to share a few yummy and healthy shrimp dishes that I had in my recipe box:

SHRIMP & POTATO SALAD

Ingredients:
1 pound Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cut into cubes
1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
2 tablespoons water
¼ teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons minced shallot
1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill
1 pound peeled, de-veined shrimp
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons olive oil
8 leaves butter lettuce
2 teaspoons olive oil
2 small tomatoes, cut into wedges
1 avocado, sliced

Bring a medium pot of salted water to boil. Place potatoes in another medium saucepan; in 1 inch of salted water.  Bring to a boil, then simmer gently for 5-8 minutes, until just tender. Drain, and then gently return to pot.  Set aside for 5 minutes. Whisk together 1 tablespoon vinegar, 2 tablespoons water, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and minced shallot to make a vinaigrette. Using a rubber spatula, gently toss potatoes with vinaigrette, dill, and a few shakes of black pepper. Set aside.

Fill a bowl with ice water.  Drop shrimp into original pot of boiling water and cook for 2 minutes, until cooked through. Drain and plunge into ice water. When cold, drain thoroughly.
In a medium bowl, whisk together lemon juice, 2 teaspoons vinegar, mustard, and 2 tablespoons olive oil. Add salt and pepper to taste. Toss shrimp in dressing. Line four plates with lettuce leaves (or tear into bite-size pieces). Gently toss potatoes with 2 teaspoons olive oil, then arrange potatoes on lettuce, followed by tomatoes and avocado. Remove shrimp from dressing (reserve dressing) and arrange on plates. Drizzle salads
(Serves 4)
________________________________________________________________

Low Fat Shrimp Fajitas

Ingredients:
4 whole wheat tortillas
1/2 cup chopped cilantro
1/4 cup fresh lime juice
1/2 tsp cumin
1 tsp chili powder
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 pound medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
2 tsp canola oil
1 medium, onion sliced vertically
1 red or yellow pepper, deseeded and cut into strips
Preparation:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Wrap tortillas in foil and warm them for 15 minutes.
Combine cilantro, lime juice, cumin, chili powder and garlic in a glass bowl. Add shrimp, stir well and marinate for 15 minutes.
Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet. Sauté onion and pepper for a 3-4 minutes, until softened. Remove vegetables from skillet and keep warm. Add shrimp with the marinade; sauté until just pink, about 3 minutes. Return vegetables to the skillet and cook for 1-2 more minutes, until heated through.

___________________________________________________________________

For those of you wondering how I am doing on my diet, I am still plugging away, avoiding carbohydrates, eating tons of vegetables and salads, and including protein when I can.  I have had red meat once in while, along with some fish, chicken, and of course shrimp.  However, I have tried not to have too much of any one thing, to avoid getting tired of certain foods, which is easy to do.

I am losing weight, not as fast as I would like, but I am losing.  My size six heels are definitely too big, my ring is still spinning around my finger, and I took a photograph of myself that I liked -- Whoo-hoo!!

My goal for Flaab is to lose twenty pounds by my deadline date, but if I lose more, I won't mind at all.  I am used to the process, and I would like to see how far I can take it. I will make my weight loss goal by deadline, but I may make a personal side wager with myself, to see how much I can exceed my original goal.

I will keep you posted.

Until next time – NO DEFEAT … NO LIMITATIONS!

Angel Logan's Write of Passage -- Dreamfield's PASTA!!
by Angel Logan at 9:52pm on 01/06/09

I am sure many must be wondering what happens at the end of my weight loss plan.  What about the pasta that Angel LOVES so much? (HAHA) I have to admit that following a low-to-no carb diet has been challenging, because pasta has always been my FAVORITE food to eat.  I have stuck to the diet, but that does not mean I do not miss having pasta from time to time.

Naturally, if I resume my previous eating habits, and reintroduce all of the carbohydrates back into my diet that I removed – I will regain my weight.  For the most part, this really needs to be less of a diet and more of a life style change.  However, I cannot honestly say that I am willing to do without pasta for the rest of my life.  There has to be some way I can maintain my weight loss and still enjoy something that I love.

Sure, there are alternatives, such as organic, soy, wheat, or other substitute pastas, but I have tried those alternatives, and they are not the same.  I do not think we should have to eat something as a substitute and try to convince ourselves that it actually tastes good, when it does not.  Trust me when I tell you that many of those substitutes smell a little funny, are not very tasty, and the consistency – UGH!

The good news is that there is pasta that is low carb and it is FANTASTIC!  Yes, you read that correctly.  I found it in my local grocery store a few years ago, and I could not believe it – the name of this miracle pasta is Dreamfields.  Okay, so you must be wondering why I have not been eating that all along.  Unfortunately, shortly after I found it, my grocery store stopped carrying it. However, recently my store brought it back, and although I am not eating any pasta right now, when I finish the weight loss plan in April – I will buy Dreamfield’s pasta, to eat periodically.  In addition, they have a national store locator on their site, for retail stores and online outlets that carry their pasta, for any of you who might like to try it out.

Here is a tidbit of information that I pulled directly from their web site:

http://www.dreamfieldsfoods.com

Dreamfields is a delicious pasta with twice the fiber (5 grams; 20% of the daily recommendation), fewer digestible carbs and a lower glycemic index than traditional pasta. Its delectable taste and nutritional benefits make it a healthful option for people with diabetes and a flavorful, nourishing pasta for the entire family.”

“Like other premium pastas, Dreamfields Pasta is made primarily with durum wheat semolina, which is why it tastes great. The pasta is unique because:

Dreamfields’ patent-pending recipe and manufacturing process protects all but 5 grams of the carbohydrates per serving from being digested and therefore lessens post-meal blood glucose rise as compared to traditional pasta.

Dreamfields contains inulin, a 100 percent natural prebiotic fiber found in common foods such as artichokes, asparagus, garlic and raisins. By providing a food source for the healthy bacteria living in the gut, prebiotics such as inulin may: help promote healthy digestion, support a healthy immune system, and improve calcium absorption. Inulin is a soluble fiber (like that found in oats, peas and apples) which means it dissolves easily in water and may improve regularity. Soluble fiber can also help reduce cholesterol and glucose levels.

Dreamfields Pasta is the only pasta clinically shown to have a lower glycemic index than traditional pasta (65% lower).
Dreamfields has all of the taste and texture of traditional pastas. “

I am beyond excited, because I do not have to give up pasta.  I can eat it within moderation, and eat a healthier version of a pasta that tastes great!!!

Until next time – NO DEFEAT … NO LIMITATIONS!

Angel Logan's Write of Passage
by Angel Logan at 1:40am on 01/02/09

Happy New Year!!!!

A colleague has embarked upon a photography career recently, and she has already received an invitation for her first showing.  Initially she had been beyond excited, but I noticed that in recent days, her confidence level has been diminishing.  When I asked her what was wrong, she asked the million-dollar question that all artists ask, “What if they do not like my work?”

I looked at her and told her that it does not matter if they do not like her work, because if they don’t – it was not meant for them to enjoy. She did not expect that response.  She replied, “Seriously?”  I answered, “Seriously.”

I went on to explain my viewpoint about art.  Art is self-expression, and how can any human being truly critique any art form?  Art comes from within, whether it is poetry, paintings, music, dance, or any other medium. I pointed out that she has to love and believe in her own work before anyone else can, and she has trust that there is an audience for every type of art in the universe.  Of course, the challenge is finding that audience through the process of marketing, but we are part of a boundless ocean of artists, and there is room for each and every one of us to reach our individual goals.

When I asked her to describe some of her photographs and their meanings – her eyes lit up. As she explained the lighting, the subject matter, and how much fun she had taking each photograph, I could see that she was quite passionate about her work. If she could share that same passion with the audience at her showing – I know that they would feel it too.

This applies to all aspects of life.  Many people think that the opinion of others must come first, but that is not true at all.  We have to start with our own way of thinking, by working on self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-awareness.  We cannot seek approval from the rest of the world, if we cannot look within our own hearts and souls, and value the gifts that make all of us so special.

What about weight loss – it can be so easy losing weight for the wrong reasons.  I do not think there is anything wrong with losing weight to look good, if you are trying to look good for you and your own level of comfort and health. However, if someone pressures you to lose weight out of ridicule and judgment – it is neither healthy nor productive to follow any weight loss plans.

What if they do not like you?  Who are they?  Why does their opinion matter? Can they live your life for you, walk in your shoes, or lose the weight for you? Instead of asking what if the glass is half-empty, why not try asking what if the glass is half-full. Perhaps I sound a bit on the cliché side.  However, a little positive energy goes a long way, in this negative world.  You can change your circumstances by changing your attitude, whether it pertains to a successful weight loss plan, or a victorious photography exhibit.  The key is being confident enough to know that the only thing standing in the path of your personal or professional success is you. Once you step out of your own way – nothing can stop you from reaching for the stars!

Angel Logan's Write of Passage - Happy New Year!
by Angel Logan at 8:12pm on 12/27/08

As we finish the year – many are thinking about New Year’s resolutions. In recent years, instead of making resolutions that might focus upon the negative aspects of life – I have been trying to remind myself of my accomplishments for the past year.  In addition, I think it will be more effective to reflect upon what I have learned during 2008, and apply those lessons to 2009, to strive to reach a higher quality of excellence for my personal and professional life.

Of course, we all suffer through challenges that are often beyond our control, but sometimes we create our own stressful moments needlessly. For instance, my cousin recently asked for advice about her administrative assistant, who is not doing things exactly the way she prefers. However, my cousin did not tell her assistant that there was a problem, and now, she is beyond frustrated because the problem has continued.  When I suggested that she should find the most effective way to communicate her work requirements, because it is not fair to expect her assistant to be a mind reader – my cousin became defensive and rejected my advice.

It seems to me that she has created unnecessary stress for herself, and she could have avoided the entire situation by finding a constructive way of conveying her work needs to the employee, right?  In addition, because she has worked herself into such a stressful state – although she asked for advice, she was not receptive to hearing anything useful.

Advice is simply a helpful suggestion meant to give the recipient another option to consider. She is not obligated to follow any advice – only to listen with courtesy and consideration when she asks others for advice.  However, because she chose to focus upon the negative aspects of the situation, rather than finding a positive solution, she had created a tense environment with her employee, and with me.

Since then, my cousin realized that she was stressing herself out over something small compared to the grand scheme of life, which was an important lesson for her to learn.  In addition, she also learned that communication is essential within any relationship. My cousin figured out that she could not expect her assistant to know what she was thinking, if she did not tell her what she needed.  She also realized that part of communication is being a good listener.  My cousin took those lessons, applied them, and found a way to resolve the problems with her employee. In fact, she said that her assistant made the changes she requested, and has become an exemplary employee.  All it took was a little communication, and a more positive approach.

Naturally, this is only one small example of someone creating an unnecessary stressful situation, but it is more common than most realize.  Stress can be extremely harmful, on a multitude of levels.  It can affect human beings physically, causing an array of health issues and ailments, and it can create discord within personal and professional relationships.  As long as that type of dissension exists – there is a strong chance that it will evolve into something more destructive.

In addition, stress can have a huge bearing on our eating habits, whether we are eating the wrong foods at the wrong times or eating too much food at one time.  Sometimes people eat more food during times of anguish, while others do not eat at all.  Neither way is very healthy, and until we face our issues head-on, stress will remain steadfast within our lives eating away at our psyches, while we eat our way to bigger waistlines, or starve ourselves to oblivion.

Instead of promising to lose or gain weight as a New Year’s resolution – why not promise to find the source of our stress and negativity, and work to resolve those issues within our lives.  While we may not always be able to avoid stress, as life presents occasional challenges, we can still choose to take a more positive approach by relinquishing fear, and embracing hope.

I have been preaching about hope for years, but I am human, and I have my moments of fear and doubt, just like anyone else.  This time of year is a great reminder to me, to practice what I preach, because I have seen the positive results.  I know from experience that if we keep doing what we have always done, we will keep getting what we have always received.  Instead of expecting the worst out of life, maybe if we can try expecting the best instead, we might be pleasantly surprised.

If we can become healthier on a personal level, the rest will fall into place, professionally and physically – then weight loss will be snap! We can all lose the weight of body fat successfully, if we can lose the weight of stress in our lives!!

Have a safe and happy New Year’s celebration.

Until next time – No Defeat … No Limitations!

Angel Logan's Write of Passage
by Angel Logan at 1:28am on 12/24/08

I had to run to the mall for a few final stocking stuffers.  Of course, the malls were not as crowded as previous years, due to the economy, which made the trip bearable.  People did not seem as cutthroat as they can be during the hustle and bustle of the holidays. It was quite nice.

Then, it hit me like a Mack truck -- the aroma of fresh baked cookies. Oh my!  I said I was over the carb withdrawals, and I stand firmly behind that. BUT, it is so wrong to have to walk by the pastry stand with the aroma of fresh, hot, baked cookies.  Then the associate behind the counter was trying to tantalize me with some cookies.  Personally, I think they have some type of pump hidden behind the counter, forcing the cookie smell out into the mall, to tempt the unsuspecting customers.  SIGH!

However, you would have been so proud of me, because although it was beyond torture, I kept going. In fact, I moved at an accelerated pace, to make sure that I did not stop. (HAHA)  No sooner had I managed to escape the cookie smells, the cinnamon bun aroma started dancing around my head.  Seriously, this is how they get you, by pushing the smell out so that you cannot help yourself.  I stopped -- yes I stopped. I had to look at those big cinnamon rolls oozing with icing on top.  This time I tortured myself, but I refrained again.  I turned around and went into another direction, and prayed that there were not anymore food stands.  Of course, I saw the Godiva Chocolate store, but the experience was not the same.  I knew that if I could escape those other temptations, then I could survive the Godiva store.

No wonder weight is an issue for so many. The commercials are inundated with foods, restaurants, and other yummy treats.  Magazines have huge color food ads, and when you go to the mall, you have to smell the treats that they have available.  Naturally it is good marketing, but it explains a lot!!

I am proud of myself, because I am still remaining true to word, and the best part is that it is now Christmas Eve!! I promised myself the foods of my choice, carb or no carb -- in moderation, for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  Then Friday, I will return to my diet, and stick with it.  So far so good.  I hope everyone else is having the same success!

I will be back after Christmas, so happy weightloss and Merry Christmas to everyone!!

Until next time -- No Defeat ... No Limitations!

Angel Logan's Write of Passage
by Angel Logan at 4:25pm on 12/19/08

Recently, a friend asked me how I found the discipline necessary to run a full-time writing business, and maintain a new diet at the same time. She was feeling some concern because she started her own business not too long ago, which she is operating from her home office, and is struggling with distractions. In addition, she mentioned that she has had a tendency to snack more, knowing she could walk into the kitchen and grab something to eat at anytime.  She asked a great question, because these are challenges that many people face, who choose to operate businesses from home offices. With the turbulence of the current economy, working from a home office is becoming more prevalent.  We have to create our own job security these days, by taking the reigns, and doing our own thing.

I guess it comes back to what I have been saying all along about commitment.  I do not believe I can achieve anything without the commitment to make it happen – plain and simple.  Sure, it is great to work from my home office, because I can literally climb out of my bed, and walk over to my PC, to begin my work.  I do not have to see anyone for the first half of my day, enabling me to work in my pajamas, for a while.  Because I set my own hours and I am a night owl at heart – I can work into the wee hours of the morning, in-tune with my own internal clock, as opposed to typical business hours.

Of course, temptations exist with a TV in the other room, a refrigerator nearby, and a nice comfortable sofa.  However, my comfort derives from knowing that I am meeting all of my monthly expenses.  I cannot enjoy any leisure time if I have to worry about bills.  Consequently, I took the concept of discipline up a notch, to the workaholic level.  Yes, I work way too much, and rest way too little. However, if I expect to have a successful business, I know I have to exercise daily diligence.  This is not a hobby for me – it is my livelihood.

Some people mistakenly think that having a full-time writing business means that I am leisurely writing when the spirit strikes me, because I must have a “real job” doing something else.  However, that is not the case at all. When I chose this path, I leaped into it full-force, as a full-time business. This is my real job, and Angel Logan is my company  name and brand.  I have a tax ID number, I have regular clients, I am building more clientele, and I perform the daily tasks of an entire staff on my own.

I have to do all of the work it takes to operate a business – the work that no one will ever see, credit, or compensate me for doing.  That is something that all business owners have to do, regardless of our individual types of business.  For me, it is a no-brainer – if I stick to my guns and exercise discipline, I will keep up with my expenses, and have a chance for success.

Okay – that is my professional life.  What about my new weight loss plan, which I have incorporated into my personal and professional lifestyle?  It is not easy changing my eating habits, with my current routine, especially since a great deal of my time is working at my computer. When I began my new low-to-no carb weight loss plan, I craved carbs more than ever, because I could not have them.  It made me hungry for pasta, bread, and potatoes all of the time.  That was extremely difficult. However, I felt determined to overcome my cravings. I have been on this diet before, so I knew that once I got over the hump of carb withdrawals – I would be fine, and I am.

I am losing weight, my body is changing gradually, and it is a great feeling.  Still, smelling a hot pizza when my husband is eating one right in front of me is difficult, but that makes me even more stubborn, and determined to succeed.

My dear friend, while you are in the beginning stages of your new business – make a decision to succeed, with dogged determination, on a personal and professional level. It does not matter what type of business you are running from your home office. Find a way to record your television shows to watch later, while you focus your attention upon your work. Ignore your refrigerator, and make a plan to achieve your business goals each day.

When we work for an employer, we exercise discipline because we do not want to lose our jobs, ultimately precluding us from paying our bills.  We might not get fired working for ourselves, but the end results would still be the same, if we don’t do what it takes to earn an income.  Treat your home business the same way you would treat an employer’s business, with respect and commitment. You would not constantly visit the company refrigerator for a snack, so why do that at home.

You have benefits and freedoms by working from your home office, but you should use that freedom to make you feel better about finishing your daily work, because you are in a more comfortable setting.  Work in your PJs if you want and set your hours to be conducive with your business needs and internal clock, but make a point of always achieving your daily goals. The results will show in your bank account.

The same thing applies to your weight loss plan. It does not matter whether you are watching your carbs, fat, calories, or exercising your pounds away – as long as you pursue your goal with unyielding resolve you will find all of the discipline and will power that you need to achieve success.

If you need a little boost on your weight loss goals, I think you should join the Flaab.com site, and make a wager with your nemesis.  Yes, this type of motivation is definitely different from most, but you can have fun, share your experiences, and make several new friends traveling the same road as you.  You will not feel alone, because you will be amazed at how many of us are facing the same challenges in life. You do not have to put yourself out on display, but it is nice to correspond with people who know how you feel, and who are climbing the same mountains that you are.  The people I have met through Flaab are losing weight, and have a great time. Think about it – you could too.

I think the most important thing I can say is to believe in yourself enough to know that you can achieve anything, if you want it bad enough, and if you are willing to do the work that it takes to get there.

Until next time – No Defeat … No Limitations!

Angel Logan's Write of Passage - My Weight Loss Journey
by Angel Logan at 9:00pm on 12/15/08

I have conquered the dark whirlpool of carb withdrawals, and captured a ray light within my weight loss journey. In fact, my appetite has dwindled significantly, making this voyage much easier. I still believe that the most important part of this process is commitment, which I feel is essential in order to achieve anything in life. However, I have to say that I have really enjoyed the camaraderie on the Flaab.com site. I have become acquainted with several wonderful individuals, and it has been a lot of fun.

I am definitely losing weight. I mentioned before that my first noticeable signs of weight loss are loose rings, a thinner face, and a decreased shoe size.  I can see a slight difference in the mirror, and my rings are not as tight as they were. However, my shoe size has definitely decreased. I tried on a pair of size 6 pumps the other day, and within a half-hour, I had stepped right out of them, just like Minnie Mouse. It is great to see 5 ½ again!!

I do not have any doubts about achieving my weight loss goal. My hubby’s ex-girlfriend will have to forget about receiving any money from me, because I am well on my way to reaching my objectives.  I still think she should have to pay me for including her in this process.  That seems more than fair to me.  In fact, let’s invite all of our enemies to pay us for giving them any thought at all – we could lose weight and gain their money.  I like that idea the best!

I am avoiding the holiday treats like cookies and cake. However, for those of you who really miss those items – check your local market’s bakery section. I know that my local market has a section with sugar-free pastries.  Last year, I tried some sugar-free cookies, and to my surprise, they were delicious.  Sure, if you sit and compare a sugar-full cookie with a sugar-less cookie – you will notice a difference.  However, you will be pleasantly surprised by how yummy sugar-free treats are today. I bet Santa wouldn’t mind trying a few sugar-free cookies to help keep in shape during his annual flight, and I’m  sure that Rudolph would appreciate it too.

Speaking of red – after a little experimenting in the kitchen, I created a really tasty and simple frozen cocktail, with Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice, Malibu Coconut Rum, some ice, and a blender.  I think I will call it a “Ruby Colada.”  It is very tasty and refreshing! Not to mention – it is not too strong in alcohol content, and the grapefruit juice is definitely good for you! (HAHA)  Happy Flaabing!!!!

Until next time – NO DEFEAT … NO LIMITATIONS!

Jenny O-J: Your commentary is thought-provoking, but I noted some of the more clever postings steer away from our flaab mission. Thanks for yours that stick to our goal of thinking about weight loss or gain!
Jenny O-J: Thanks for my comment. I think that for most of us, it's about encouragement, though. Weight loss is different for everyone, is easier/harder for different reasons. I just wanna be sure flaab sticks to that goal overall in its aims.
